A tooth-coloured match filling, also known as a white filling, is a composite resin material that is colour-matched to perfectly blend in with the rest of your natural tooth enamel and is used to fill a cavity. A cavity is a hole large or small and sometimes may be visible only on x-rays. Cavities should be treated as soon as possible in order to prevent the cavity from becoming larger and the decay extending. Tooth coloured match fillings are a popular type of filling because they are durable and almost unnoticeable.
While Eagle Ridge Dental Clinic has been a mercury-free practice for over 18 years, many people still have silver or mercury fillings in their mouths from years past. These fillings are not particularly pleasing to the eye, and ultimately result in a weaker tooth structure.
Silver fillings like those used in years past, have many drawbacks. The edges of the silver filling can wear down, become weak, or break. This results in the tooth not being protected, which means cavities can develop once again. With age, the metal of a silver filling expands, contracts, and can split. Silver fillings contain 50 percent mercury, and can corrode, leak, and cause stains on your teeth and gums.
